1decision

Through our PSHE curriculum we aim to develop each pupil’s self-esteem as well as their appreciation of the views, opinions, religions and cultures of other people. They are taught to be increasingly aware about their own rights, respect and responsibilities leading to pupils becoming life-long learners who make a positive contribution to our world, preparing them for life in modern Britain. We use a programme called 1decision to support the PSHE development in our school. 1decision is a comprehensive and engaging programme which enables pupils to explore various topics in a safe and educational environment.

Picture News

In partnership with Picture News we ensure our children learn from the world around them. Each week Picture News chooses a current news story, provides an image, a thought-provoking question and a variety of teaching resources for us to use with children throughout key stage 1 and key stage 2. Once a week children engage with a Picture News session, which often links with one of the British Values. To find out more, please choose one of the files below or click here

Enrichment Opportunities

At Leftwich Community Primary School Educational Visits and Outdoor Activities are integral parts of our children’s education. Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances. They offer opportunities to enrich the curriculum, enabling our children to have first-hand experience of a wide range of topics and activities. These often are the most memorable learning experiences and help them to make sense of the world around them by making links between feelings and learning. They allow them to transfer learning experiences outside the classroom and vice versa.

Educational Visits

On residential visits especially, there are opportunities to develop social skills which have a long-lasting beneficial effect. All visits are carefully planned and organised by teachers and range from short local visits, making use of the immediate environment, to more extended journeys. Each year the school arranges a number of educational visits and activities that take place off the school site and/or out of school hours.

There are three residential visits which take place during the school year, in years 2, 4 and 6.

Residential Visits 2023-2024

Year 2: Catalyst Science Discover Museum – Children begin their visit at Knowsley Safari Park and then move on to the museum where they take part in workshops and sleep under the stars in the Observatory Gallery. Cost £41.50

Year 4: Petty Pool Outdoor Centre – Children stay at this local outdoor adventure centre for one night. Here they challenge themselves in a range of team building, adventure activities. Cost £85.00

Year 6: London – Children enjoy a whistle stop tour of London over a two day visit, staying at the YHA London Earl’s Court Hostel. This amazing experience begins at the Natural History Museum and ends with a flight on the London Eye, with many adventures in between, including a West End show and a boat trip on the Thames. The visit is linked to the children’s learning aroung The London Eye Mystery. Cost £175.00

Forest Schools

Leftwich Primary School prides itself on opportunities for all. Therefore Miss Danielles takes children out for Forest School sessions, so as to inspire children to achieve their full potential through stimulating outdoor experiences.

During Forest School sessions Miss Danielles provides children with the opportunity to practically learn about the natural environment, handle risks, ask questions and think critically about their discoveries, co-operate with others, develop their social skills, grow in confidence and become self-motivated to make their own judgments. The outcome of these developments is that these skills are then not only transferred to other areas of the curriculum, but to areas of the learner’s life enabling them to achieve their full potential.

Social, Moral, Spiritual & Cultural Education (SMSC)

British Values

At Leftwich Community Primary School, we embedded ‘British Values’ through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education which permeates through the school’s curriculum and supports the development of the “whole child”.

At Leftwich we recognise that such development is most successful when those values and attitudes are promoted by all the staff and provide a model of behaviour for our pupils.

‘British Values’ have been identified as:

Democracy

The ability to communicate is the most important area of learning. At Leftwich Community Primary School, we ensure that pupils are given a ‘voice’ to communicate. The method of using this ‘voice’ could be using words, objects, photographs, pictures, symbols, touch cues, eye pointing or body language.

We empower our pupils by giving them opportunities to make choices about the things that they believe to be important. By valuing each ‘voice’ and by listening and responding to that voice we demonstrate that we support democracy and liberty. We hold elections for our many ‘committees’ and run a school election alongside the local elections.

Rule of Law

We involve pupils in setting codes of behaviour; helping pupils to make decisions and choices that are acceptable to the school community and society at large. Pupils are helped to learn to manage their behaviour and take responsibility for their actions. Staff are committed to providing a consistent and predictable environment within the school and beyond.

We can help some pupils to understand the connection between actions and consequences. This type of environment enables pupils to feel safe and secure; this, in turn, promotes the optimum conditions for learning to take place.

Individual Liberty

Pupils at Leftwich Primary are encouraged to become good and valued citizens. We do this by supporting each pupil to become as independent as possible. We endeavour to demonstrate that everyone has rights; this includes the right to say ‘No’ to ideas or activities that they do not want to take part in. Some pupils will be able to take responsibility for particular roles and understand that with certain rights comes a level of responsibility. Learning to do things independently is an important part of learning to understand yourself. We support others by participating in charitable events such as Red Nose Day/Comic Relief, Children in Need and Jeans for Genes Day. At Leftwich, we believe that engendering a caring and helpful environment and by learning to be independent can boost and nurture a healthy self-esteem.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Leftwich Community Primary School serves a multi-faith community where each person is respected and valued equally without regard to ability, gender, faith, heritage or race.

Cultural appreciation and development form part of our curriculum. We place great emphasis on providing encounters and participation in events and celebrations to broaden all pupils’ experiences and awareness of others.

Our Assemblies help all pupils to find out about themselves and others linking their lives to the communities in which they belong. The themes cover areas such as friendships, helping others and celebrations from a range of faiths and world events.

Pupils are encouraged to experience British Culture through our curriculum themes. As a school, we take part in local sporting activities which help to instil “fair play” and engender a “team spirit”.

The staff work closely with parents, carers and other professionals to ensure that the pupils at Leftwich Community Primary School, are happy, well cared for and enabled to learn the skills they need to live a fulfilling life as part of their community.
